Staff Reporter Positions
What is the position?
- News staff writes stories that tell the audience all the important things they need to know. They work within their assigned beat, call sources on their beat as often as necessary — to keep abreast of potential stories. They read other publications and look for stories concerning their beats. Besides contributing to the printed publication, they are responsible for contributing to online coverage.

Job Description
Department: Editorial
Reports To: News Editor
Hours: 10-15
Paid: Yes, per piece
You’re well read and keep up with what’s happening on campus and in the community. You’re naturally curious and want to learn to talk to strangers or are already a pro at asking questions. The College Heights Herald is looking for writers who enjoy fast-paced environments, want to learn to work with tight deadlines and are ready to take their reporting skills to the next level telling important stories affecting the Western Kentucky University community.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for producing between one and two stories a week
- Develops story ideas and maintains source contacts
- Works closely with editors to determine angles and appropriate sourcing for stories
- Must be able to think creatively about news presentation (i.e. photos, graphics, etc.)
- Staff reporters should be well read in issues surrounding their beat or be willing to cover a beat
- Should demonstrate willingness to learn
- Must meet or beat all deadlines
- Must follow the ethical guidelines set forth by the Society of Professional Journalists
Qualifications:
- Must be a WKU student
- Success in a School of Media writing-related class strongly advised (knowledge of grammar, style conventions, etc. is essential)
- Strong interest in news (especially as it pertains to digital)
- Should be willing to cultivate a lively social media presence
