Photo Staff Application
What is the position?
- Photographers will shoot assignments given by the photo editor and meet deadlines with assignments for print and online, as well as have complete and accurate caption information. All photographers are expected to pitch at least two to three projects in a semester, including photo stories and multimedia pieces.
Who should apply?
- Students who are passionate about visual journalism, wanting to gain experience or develop their experience they have now. Anyone majoring in photojournalism, journalism, or have an interest in documentary photojournalism should apply.

Job Description
Department: Editorial
Reports To: Photo Editor
Hours: 10-15 hours per week
Paid: Yes, by the piece
You enjoy carrying your camera around campus and capturing the life and spirit of the students, faculty, and staff at WKU. You’ve got an eye for composition and can meet daily and weekly deadlines with no problem. Shoot sports, headshots, and building mugs? No problem! You’re a news person and can do it all. Photographers at the Herald are tenacious and willing to grow. They enjoy fast-paced environments and are ready to tell visual stories all around the campus of Western Kentucky University.
Responsibilities:
- Shoots quality photographs and written concise, accurate cutlines (generally 2-3 assignments per week)
- Performs special assignments, when directed by photo editor
- Works with the Photo Editor to hone technical camera skills
- Pitches ideas for daily assignments as well as long-term projects
- Must have an undying respect for deadlines and should demonstrate willingness to learn
- Carries a camera and can jump on spot news coverage at any given moment
- Must follow the ethical guidelines set forth by the Society of Professional Journalists
Qualifications:
Must be a WKU student
Should have a portfolio of photography for review, emphasis on news and sports photography preferred
Must demonstrate knowledge of photographic equipment and lighting
